Instagram algorithm busters in 2018

Did you know?

According to Hubspot,

More and more consumers are turning to Instagram instead of Google to search for brands

It’s no secret: Instagram’s algorithm favors more likes and comments, engagement. The more the better, right? Not necessarily…

Here’s what you may not be aware of. The Instagram algorithm cares more about how quickly a post receives its engagement!

So first off – Timing is crucial.

Know when your audience is most active when timing your post

Two options:

ONE:

Time the posting for when people are most active. There are a variety of 3rd party applications you can use to achieve this. Instagram expert Taylor Loren from Later wrote a blog offering quick tips on how.

TWO:

Get engagement quickly early on after posting. One way is to form an Instagram support group “pod’.

How long people view your post matters!

We often hear that it’s nice to keep things short and sweet. Here’s something you may not expect: Lengthier captions will keep your audience viewing your posts longer. You’re allowed to use up to 2200 characters in a post, so use them wisely. Optimize your captions.

Don’t just post, engage your audience

Stay active and take the time to reply to comments and engage with your audience. The Instagram Algorithm Rewards You For Interacting With Your Followers

Be smart in your use of #hashtags

First, avoid getting shadowbanned. Certain hashtags are actually banned by Instagram. Some hashtags have been marked as spam, filled with inappropriate content (such as nudity or violence). How do we know if a certain hashtag is banned?
Take #kansas for example. The word itself seems innocent, yet it is banned on Instagram.

Test your hashtag here to ensure it isn’t on the shadowban. Don’t use the hashtag if it is.

Keep The Hashtag Relevant, By Mixing Them Up

Avoid using the same hashtags for every post. That too counts as hashtag spam, and your post will be demoted. Keep them relevant and specific to each post. Be sure to mix them up, and use only hashtags that are topically relevant to the post.
“Instagram recently rolled out the ability to follow Instagram hashtags, which means instead of users having to scroll through a feed to discover your tagged content, your posts could show up automatically in the feeds of potential new followers.”

Now – the ultimate algorithm buster…

“2018 will be a huge year for Instagram Stories, and as organic reach drops for regular Instagram posts, stories will be the key to engaging with your followers and staying top of mind.”
